The scholarship project promoted by the Kim Jin-duk and Jeong Gyeong-sik Foundation contains the most important values. This is because it is for our future generations.

The meaning of the scholarship program

The Jin Duck & Kyung SIk Kim Foundation are striving to provide stable learning opportunities from elementary, middle, and high school to university students. It is because students hope to pioneer our future and to carry on our will well.

For this reason, the first project conducted since the establishment of the Jin Duck & Kyung SIk Kim Foundation in 2012 was the selection of unification scholarship students together with the SF Regional Council for Democracy. The longing for the reunification of the motherland has been the long aspirations of Chairman Jin Duck Kim and Ms. Kyung-sik Kim and I believe that the foundation must also support future talents who will create a unified motherland.

Continued scholarship

Beginning with awarding scholarships of $1,000 each to 16 selected for unification scholarships in December 2012, the Jin Duck & Kyung SIk Kim Foundation sponsored the Writing and Drawing Contest hosted by the Northern California Association of Korean American Schools. We support scholarship programs promoted by all walks of life, such as and athletic meets.

The Jin Duck & Kyung SIk Kim Foundation will continue to establish itself as a strong support with the Korean community so that our second and third generations will not be able to break their aspirations for learning due to financial difficulties.

Just before the Christmas break, the Korea Law Center gratefully received a gift of $100,000 from Dr. Jonathan H. Kim and Lyla Kim to support research on legal issues relating to South Korea. Dr. Kim, who received his undergraduate degree from the University’s College of Letters and Sciences, is a leading philanthropist in the San Francisco Bay Area to causes and events related to Korean-American relations.  The funds will support research into reparations for WWII Korean “comfort women” and the resolution of territorial disputes between Korea and Japan.

Dr. Kim and his sister, Soon Kim, visited the law school on December 20, 2017. “Dr. Kim has made a generous gift to the Berkeley Korea Law Center,” said Dean Erwin Chemerinsky.  “We welcome his leadership on U.S.-Korea relations.”  According to Professor John Yoo, director of the Korea Law Center, the Kim’s gift will support faculty research on the disputes between Korea and Japan over the island of Dokdo, South Korea’s maritime border, and remedies under U.S. and international law for the violation of the rights of “comfort women” during World War II.  In these fields and beyond, Professor John Yoo has been a leader in bridging the East and West and inspiring intelligent remediation. “The Korea Law Center will continue its research into these important legal issues centered on Korea, thanks to Dr. Kim’s generosity, and it will be able to provide students with invaluable experience.”
