Our Mission

The Jin Duck & Kyung Sik Kim Foundation is a non-profit organization established to support the Korean community and raise the status of Koreans with the support of the late Jin Duck Kim—the former president of the American Honam Friendship Association—and his wife, Kyung Sik Kim.

During their lifetime, Jin Duck and Kyung Sik respected all people and gave love and grace generously to marginalized neighbors. They served the Korean community and actively engaged and continued various and support activities so that the Korean community could stand with pride as Koreans.

In order to carry on their will, the eldest son Jonathan H. Kim (President), the eldest daughter Soon Ok Kim (Lee), the second daughter Soon Ran Kim (Chairwoman), the second son Christopher Kim, and the third daughter Susan Kim, launched ‘Jin Duck & Kyung Sik Kim Foundation’ in 2012.

As part of an effort to continue the pride of Korean Americans, the foundation has continued to sponsor various events in the Korean American community. Such events included: the Korean American Festival, the San Francisco Korean American Day celebration, the World Cup Soccer Cheer for Solidarity, and the San Francisco Democratic Peace Advisory Committee event. Additionally, the foundation has also sponsored various Korean community events hosted by organizations such as the San Francisco Korean Center, the Silicon Valley Korean School, the Northern California Media Association, and the Silicon Valley Korean Association events.

Aside from providing a great deal of support to non-profit organization events, the foundation is actively involved with continuous efforts to promote the recognition of the Dokdo Islands as Korean territory. As part of the campaign to raise awareness of the issue, the foundation has been involved with a number of activities. Since 2013, advertisements have been posted on large billboards in the San Francisco area informing the public that Dokdo is indeed Korean territory. In the same year, the foundation successfully launched the White House petition campaign—titled “We the People”—with the collaboration of the Silicon Valley Korean Association. CEO Jonathan H. Kim was the first to discover that Google had changed the name of the Dokdo Islands to Liancourt Rock, and is actively working to correct it.

History Correction Campaign

JThe Jin Duck & Kyung Sik Kim Foundation is working to correct distorted or misunderstood history, with the belief that a correct view of history comes from a well-established historical account. There are a few particular issues of import. One issue that the foundation contends with is the Japanese government’s claim of sovereignty over Dokdo, which is a territory of Korea. The foundation strives to bring awareness to mainstream society in the United States that Japan's claims are unfounded. Another issue that is important to the campaign centers around the “Comfort Women” issues. During World War II, the Japanese military committed war crimes involving the forced sexual slavery of women—these women were euphemistically called “Comfort Women.” The foundation continues to carry out activities that promote the acceptance and recognition of truth.

Retrieving the name of 'Dokdo' on Google Maps

Japan pushed Dokdo into a disputed area by insisting on compelling sovereignty over Dokdo, and on October 24, 2012, unfortunately, we were robbed of the name 'Dokdo' from the Google Maps most used by people around the world. The Jin duck & Kyung Sik Kim Foundation is working in every way to reclaim the name'Dokdo' on Google Maps, such as officially protesting against Google and holding a signing campaign filled with the aspirations of Koreans.

Establishment of the Japanese military comfort women's monument

The 'comfort women', a sexual slavery system that was practiced by the Japanese military in World War II, remains a very painful pain for us. However, Japan is rather fabricating and distorting history in a situation where it is not enough to kneel in front of the mistakes of history and make a sincere apology. Japan's attitude was enough to scam not only the Korean community, but also several communities, including the victims of China and the Philippines. Activities to correct this have been initiated in the Northern California region, and a comfort women monument was erected in downtown SF in 2017 according to a resolution of the San Francisco City Council. The foundation did not spare any support for the construction of the Girimbi, and this year also established the 'Seoul Comfort Women memorial' in Namsan, Seoul, which continues the spirit of the SF Comfort Women Memorial.
